---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge vertically = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. Diagrams show all rows in pattern seen from the right side. DECREASE TIP-1 (evenly): To calculate how to decrease evenly, use the total number of stitches on row (e.g. 86 stitches), minus edge stitches (2 stitches), and divide the remaining 84 stitches by number of decreases to be done (e.g. 15) = 5.6. In this example decrease by knitting alternately approx. every 4th and 5th stitch and every 5th and 6th stitch together. DECREASE TIP-2 (applies to V-neck): All decreases are done from the right side! Decrease inside 1 edge stitch. DECREASE AFTER 1 EDGE STITCH AS FOLLOWS: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 1 stitch decreased). DECREASE BEFORE 1 EDGE STITCH AS FOLLOWS: Work until 2 stitches remain before marker, knit these 2 stitches together (= 1 stitch decreased). DECREASE TIP-3 (applies to neck edge): Begin 1 stitch before stitch with marker, slip the next 2 stitches as if to knit together, knit 1, pass the 2 slipped stitches over stitch worked (= 2 stitches decreased). Move the marker to the middle stitch. KNITTING TIP: When decreasing for armholes and neck, continue the pattern as before. If the outermost stitch towards the sides or neck is a stitch to be slipped, replace this stitch with a knit stitch in color this row is worked with. BIND-OFF TIP: To avoid a tight bind-off edge when binding off, you may use a larger needle. If this still is too tight make 1 yarn over after approx. every 4th stitch while binding off (bind off yarn overs as stitches). ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- VEST – SHORT SUMMARY OF PIECE: Work back piece and front piece back and forth on needle separately, bottom up. Sew the piece together as explained in pattern. Then work an edge in rib around the neck and around both armholes. BACK PIECE: Cast on 86-90-94-106-114-118 stitches on circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 with dark grey in DROPS Alaska. Purl 1 row (= wrong side). Then work rib as follows from right side: 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH – read explanation above, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until 1 stitch remains, and finish with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Continue rib like this for 5 cm = 2". Switch to single pointed needles size 7 MM = US 10.75. Knit 1 row from right side while decreasing 15-15-15-19-19-19 stitches evenly - read DECREASE TIP-1 = 71-75-79-87-95-99 stitches. Knit 1 row from wrong side. Continue to work pattern from right side as follows: Work A.1 (= 1 edge stitch), work A.2 until 2 stitches remain on row (= 17-18-19-21-23-24 repetitions of 4 stitches – first repetition begins with pearl grey background and dark grey stitches that are slipped), work first stitch in A.2, so that pattern begins and ends the same, and finish with A.1 (= 1 edge stitch). Continue pattern back and forth like this. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When piece measures 31-32-33-34-35-36 cm = 12¼"-12½"-13"-13⅜"-13¾"-14¼", bind off for armholes at beginning of every row in each side as follows: Read KNITTING TIP and bind off 3 stitches 2-2-2-3-3-3 times in each side, and then 1 stitch 6-6-6-7-7-7 times in each side = 47-51-55-55-63-67 stitches. Continue with pattern as before. When piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼", bind off the middle 15-19-23-23-23-27 stitches for neck and finish each shoulder separately. Continue pattern as before, and bind off 1 stitch on next row from the neck = 15-15-15-15-19-19 stitches remain on shoulder. Work until piece measures 56-58-60-62-64-66 cm = 22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26" (piece measures approx. 25-26-27-28-29-30 cm = 9¾"-10¼"-10⅝"-11"-11⅜"-11¾" from where decrease for armholes begin). Bind off knitting from right side. Work the other shoulder the same way. FRONT PIECE: Cast on 86-90-94-106-114-118 stitches on circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 with dark grey in DROPS Alaska. Purl 1 row (= wrong side). Then work rib as follows from right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until 1 stitch remains, and finish with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. OVERVIEW OF NEXT SECTION: Then work armholes while AT THE SAM TIME decreasing for V-neck. Insert 1 marker in the middle stitch on row (marker is used to bind off for V-neck). Read section ARMHOLE and V-NECK before continuing. ARMHOLE: When piece measures 31-32-33-34-35-36 cm = 12¼"-12½"-13"-13⅜"-13¾"-14¼", bind off for armholes at beginning of every row in each side as follows: Read KNITTING TIP and bind off 3 stitches 2-2-2-3-3-3 times in each side, and then 1 stitch 6-6-6-7-7-7 times in each side. V-NECK: AT THE SAME TIME when piece measures 32-33-34-35-36-37 cm = 12½"-13"-13⅜"-13¾"-14¼"-14½", bind off the middle stitch with marker from right side, finish each shoulder separately. Put stitch in the left side (when garment is worn) on a stitch holder. RIGHT SIDE (when garment is worn): Continue pattern back and forth as before, and continue decrease for armholes as explained above. In addition decrease for V-neck towards mid front - read DECREASE TIP-2. Decrease 1 stitch on every other row (i.e. every row from right side) 2-3-4-4-4-6 times in total, and then every 4th row (i.e. every other row from right side) 6-7-8-8-8-8 times = 15-15-15-15-19-19 stitches remain on shoulder. LEFT SIDE (when garment is worn): Slip stitches from stitch holder on needles size 7 MM = US 10.75. Continue pattern back and forth as before, and continue decrease for armholes. In addition decrease for V-neck towards mid front - remember DECREASE TIP-2. ASSEMBLY: Sew in side seams inside 1 edge stitch in each side. Sew shoulder seams inside bind-off edge. NECK EDGE: Begin from right side on top of one shoulder, and pick up inside 1 edge stitch approx. 92-100-106-110-114-120 stitches around the neck on circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 with color dark grey (number of stitches must be divisible by 2). Work rib in the round (= knit 1/purl 1) - adjust so that 1 knit stitch is mid front at the bottom of V-neck. Work rib in the round for 3 cm = 1⅛", but to make the rib lay nicely mid front, decrease 2 stitches mid front - read DECREASE TIP-3. Decrease like this every other round until neck edge measures 3 cm = 1⅛". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl - read BIND-OFF TIP. SLEEVE EDGE: Begin from right side at the bottom of one armhole and pick up inside 1 edge stitch approx. 80-84-88-92-92-96 stitches around the armhole on a short circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 with color dark grey (number of stitches must be divisible by 4). Work rib in the round = knit 2/purl 2 for 3 cm = 1⅛". Bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl - remember BIND-OFF TIP. Work another edge the same way around the other armhole. |

Bon tricot!
